Clothing is an important and integral part of any culture, and it is often overlooked when discussing culture. With such a rich and diverse culture, everyone will find a unique sample of clothing in Vietnam traditional costume. In Vietnam, which has about sixty different ethnic groups, there is a wide variety of clothing styles that are similar to vibrant and conflicting colors and vibrant patterns.

    Vietnam traditional costume for Men

A traditional Vietnamese dress for men is known as Ao Dai. This is a long silk tunic with the usual cozy collar, buttoned on the left side. A man’s tunic falls to his knees and usually wears loose pants underneath.

In the past, Ao Dai’s color in Vietnam indicated a person’s position in society. Gold is the color that represented real power in ancient Vietnam. Ao Dai Kings was embroidered by dragons to show their strength and power. Senior officials wore Ao Dai’s purple, and ordinary people wore various shades of blue.

Today, Ao Dai is not generally used every day. However, Ao Dai is a symbol of purity and grace, and the Vietnamese carry it in large numbers on traditional occasions such as weddings and Tet (Lunar New Year).

    Vietnam traditional costume for Women

In the past, the northern part of Vietnam uses Ao Dai a little differently than the southern part. In the north, the four-section Ao Dai is worn with a long skirt and a leaf hat called Non-Quai Thao, and sometimes only a scarf on the head. In the southern part, Ao Dai is worn on loose pants. These pants are white, black or with colorful prints. From the waist, the dress is divided into the front and back panels.

Women in the Mekong Delta wear a slightly different type of traditional clothing: Ao Ba Ba. Ao Ba Ba is a shirt without a collar with the back of a direct piece of fabric. The front part of the body consists of two parts, and in the middle, there are two straps that extend from top to bottom. This sophisticated shirt is often worn with white or black long pants.

In addition to the best-known traditional dresses in Vietnam, local ethnic groups have their own styles and costumes.

    Traditional Thai costume in Vietnam
Thai ethnic clothing in Vietnam is elegant and modest. It consists of a simple blouse and a long skirt embroidered with sun motifs, flowers and dragons. The costume is accompanied by belts and Pieu scarves and various silver jewelry.

Traditional costume of the Hmong in Vietnam

Vietnamese Hmong prefer to dress more refined, but at the same time bright and colorful, with a bohemian flavor. Their clothes are made of linen and consist of many flowers and embroidered motifs. The outfit consists of a black shirt, a bright skirt, leggings and hats. Women often add silver beads and jewelry to dresses to give a sense of personality and spirituality.

Traditional costume of the Cham in Vietnam

Traditional Cham women’s clothing may not be as bright or vibrant as the rest, but it has a certain charm. The costume consists of a tight tunic, a shirt-colored skirt and a beautiful scarf. The highlight of the costume is a belt that is tied in the chest and around the waist and has iridescent golden tones and meticulous details.

Vietnam traditional costumes have undergone significant changes due to the influence of the West. However, it retained much of its traditional charm and talent. The Vietnamese people remain proud of their unique sense of clothing and culture.
